Performance Mandala Prisoner

22.07.2011
International Interdisciplinary Cultural Festival Cultural Dust
Patarei Prison, Tallinn, Estonia
Duration 8 hours (10 PM - 6 AM)
Operators Katrin Orav, Elen Arike

The "Mandala Prisoner", being placed in an old prison, stands for monotonous, regular and limited work process. This setting constructs a frame for the legends on Eastern-Europe which are represented through artists own perspectives. However, their diverse cognition, experience and stories are combined into a single mandala, that is, a geometric model of the universe. Moreover, this symbolic image is carried on its place spoon by spoon, thus creating a conditional frame of a machine. The image is built from flour which is also covering their bodies.
Two operators are on the set to record the ritual which was simultaneously projected outside onto a screen. These captures are mostly close-ups. Audience could follow the action through the bars in order to get a complete overview.
